Hey guys...

I am having an interesting situation on one of my shows, hopefully someone could shed some light...

I have a severe hum between a video playback rack and FOH audio mixer. I thought it might be that the outs on the video rack mixer are unbalanced, however adding a line balancer (a Whirlwind that also splits the signal) doesn't help. I am running out of the isolated out on the splitter, and flipping ground/lift switches throughout the chain, all to varying degrees of success but nothing that completely gets rid of the hum.

As I was screwing around, I noticed that by shorting pins 2 and 3 on the Direct Out on the splitter (the out that I'm not using), the hum went away completely. Thought this was interesting, and that it might give someone a little insight into the situation. Hopefully someone with a little more wiring background then myself might have an idea.

Thanks for all your help.

I'm looking at 7 IEM systems for a client who also wants an antenna combiner. I was looking at the Sennheiser EW300IEMG3 and the only question remaining relates to the antenna combiner. The only kit I can find specifically for the 300s (G3IEMDIRKIT4) is only for 4 systems, not 7 like the client wants. Is there any easy way of combining 7 systems without upgrading to the AC3000 combiner or is it easier to just use 2 of the G3IEMDIRKIT systems? Can I just link one of the AC3 units from the kit into the other?

Sennheiser's website seems pretty terrible at explaining this at the moment

Thanks in advance

Our local civic center is tearing the existing floor out of the arena to the dirt and replacing it. We will be getting many more floor pockets than we have now with what we actually need in them. I will be adding a mic send to each pocket and comm in selected pockets. I need to spec the wire size and connector type for each. I assume that the wire type will be the same for both mic and comm sends but wanted to ask somebody that knows more than me. We are using Clear Comm headsets.
They are once again asking the light guy to spec sound stuff.

I am currently using a Furman TX-3A tunable crossover in my system. I am running it in 3-way mono tri amping my mains. For the main enclosures I'm using Peavey 3020HT cabinets with a Peavey MFX-1 horn stacked on top. I have a Souncraft Spirit board. Have everything panned right. Coming out of the right output into channel 1 of an Alesis dual 32 band graphic EQ. Out of EQ into crossover. Using a Peavey CS800 for highs, a Peavey CS800 for mids and a CS1000X for the lows. When adjusting the mid frequency on the crossover I get some loss at certain frequencies. It almost sounds like a dirty pot. What is a good starting point for mid frequency setting on the crossover? Lows? I have the manuals for each componant. Should I go with a 3 way stereo crossover to use both outs on the board and EQ and still be able to triamp? This crossover is nearly 24 years old. Might be time for a new one? Tried to upload the manuals but couldn't.

My stage crew is made up of some high schoolers, trained by someone (that would be me) who did some acting (about 5 or 6 productions) and directing (3 or 4 shows), and was trained by a SM for exactly one year. Meaning: they are being trained by someone who requires much more training. We have a 24-channel analog mixer in our auditorium. Of course, my directors during musicals and plays want to wireless everyone (whatever happened to PROJECTING?). Other than the spring musical, there is rarely a time where we use more than 4 or 5 channels, so when a kid has to deal with 20 channels all of a sudden, he tends to freak out a little, y'know? My thought is this: what about having two kids run the sound? One on, say, channels 1-12, the other on 13-24? Do you see any inherent complications with this that I am missing? I mean, as long as they are not in each others' way...To split hairs, I understand their ears would be different, so their might be slight differences in their respective outputs of voices, but this is a high school production, and I am simply looking for volume to be high enough w/o feedback, and that the kids don't sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Hi,
I'm new to this whole business so sorry if i don't give enough information or say the wrong things.

I took over as technical manager of a student theatre company (at durham uni, UK) at the beginning of this year. The first thing they asked me to do was investigate wireless mic systems and what we could possibly get. I've had no experience with headworn wireless mics though so have no idea what to look for.

These are the spec i need to comply to:
- Cost £200-450 (per unit - i need 3, budget may be slightly flexible if we make a profit on the upcoming production)
- mic size, as small as possible (the presiedent like this Audio technica and we have previously hired this Sennheiser
-Theatre size ~300-400 capacity
-wireless mic usage - we use them to mic singers in musicals (once yearly) and would hope to hire them out to neighbouring student theatre companies
-Current sound system mixing desk which runs into a separate 2kW power amp (can't remember the name) into 4/6 speakers, mid-range (i.e. not subs or tweets)
-We also have 2 sennheiser receivers which we can use, but onl handheld mics to go with them
- there is no other buildings near by which use wireless equipment so we have no danger of intereference

So my questions:
1) is this a good mic and/or good value for money at £250?
2) when it says it is "Terminated for Sennheiser wireless systems using Lemo connector" what does it mean? (i.e. can i easily put it into any body pack)
3)if i was to get that microphone what bodypak/receiver would you recommend?
4)anything else you recommend?

Thank you guys, if you can answer you'll help me out massively :D

Hey all, We are doing "The Man who Came to Dinner". The show is set in 1939. Towards the end they are recording a radio broadcast. There is a sound crew in the room doing the recording. I'm going to have to build a prop and unfortunately I'm having a hard time even finding information on what it would have looked like. I'm envisioning some sort of reel to reel system with controls that look like some of the "smaller" units on this site.

Any suggestions to help me figure out what this thing should look like would be greatly appreciated. Brand's and models of equipment to research would be really helpful.

The high school school I work with has been offerd a good deal ($8,000) for a lightly used Soundcraft MH3 24 channel board. They've got a good FOH console (36 channel Yamaha M7CL), and they are wondering if this would be good for a monitor mix console. They already have the splitters and wiring to an on-stage mix position, all they need is the board. I know it has fewer channels than the main board, but I don't see them needing that many channels in situations where they would use the monitor board.

So, would this be a good board for monitor mixes? Or, would something else in the same (or lower) price range be better?

I am trying to convert a unbalanced RCA output from a DJ mixer to a balanced output of XLR so I can run it to a set of power speakers. My fear with just going with 1/4" is the interference that will get picked up on the run to the speakers.

My initial thought was to use a DI box, but I have read that many cheaper models will cause more of a hum than without them. What would my best bet be? The run to the speakers could be anywhere from 25' to 50' worth of cable.

I have recently been given the resposibility of handling the projectors and mic setups for meetings in my multiuse building. I am the SM/Head Rigger for the main preformance area and because of ecposure to the technology I have been morphed into a tech.
Yesterday I went in to set up two projectors for Powerpoint presentations, simple right? It was until they decided to turn tthe room and everything had to be redone. Then they added lapel mics. This is where the problem arose. We have seven meeting rooms that can be seperated by air walls. The speakers are 70v ceiling units. I can turn either room on or off and put the inroom mic inputs into it. What I can't do is have one mic inputing in room seven and another system in one. We have podiums that contain it's own sound system, complete with a condenser mic. I tried to take the lapel base and input it into a dynamic mic input on the podium. All I could get was a loud hum. The XLR to 1/4 adaptor was unbalanced so I figured I needed a TRS 1/4. Off to the electronic store, no change. The I realized the Shure base has a 1/4 jack in addition to the XLR. I tried both balanced and unbalanced, same result. I'm at a loss at this point.
As a side note, the 1/4 jack on the wireless base is unbalanced, why?
As I have noted in past posts, I am a light guy/rigger. I have enough soound knowledge to be dangerous.
